Paying for an abortion

Apple Health (also known as Medicaid)

  • In Washington state, pregnant youth and adults who make below a certain amount of money can qualify for Apple Health (you do not need to be a US citizen). You may qualify when pregnant even if you have not been eligible in the past. Apple Health will pay for an abortion and follow-up care including birth control methods and can be completely confidential.

Private insurance

  • All insurance companies in the state of Washington that cover pregnancy care also cover abortions. Make sure to check with your insurance. Note that if you are using insurance through a parent, guardian, or spouse's job, they may learn of the abortion through paperwork.

No insurance

  • If you do not have insurance, you can pay with cash or a credit card. If you need assistance, The Northwest Abortion Access Fund is a non-profit organization that helps people pay for abortions. Call 1-866-692-2310 or visit www.nwaafund.org

Types of abortion

Medication abortion is when a person takes medicine (abortion pills) to end their pregnancy. Medication abortion is an option to people who have been pregnant a short time, up to 11 weeks of pregnancy.

In-clinic abortion is when a healthcare provider removes pregnancy tissue from the uterus, up to 14-16 weeks of pregnancy. If an abortion is needed after 14-16 weeks of pregnancy, it usually takes more than one visit. In-clinic abortions can be done until 26 weeks in Washington state.

Future pregnancy and birth control

  • Sometimes people are worried that having an abortion will make it hard to get pregnant later. This is not true. In fact, you can get pregnant right after having an abortion.
  • If you do not want to get pregnant right away, there are many different birth control methods that you can choose. The health care provider at the abortion clinic can help you start a method the day of your abortion.
