  • PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication (pills or shots) that reduces your chances of getting HIV if you are HIV-negative.
  • PrEP is not a vaccine, treatment, or cure for HIV.
  • PrEP neither prevents nor treats other STIs. Condoms and safer sex practices can be paired with PrEP to prevent other STIs.

Getting on PrEP

Follow these steps if you are interested in getting on PrEP:

  1. Talk to your doctor

    Find a PrEP provider near you.

  2. Test for HIV

  3. Receive a prescription for PrEP

  4. Take PrEP as prescribed

  5. Continue testing for HIV as recommended

Paying for PrEP

If you live in King County, PrEP is available at no-cost. Call 206-744-3954 and speak to a PrEP specialist at the Public Health – Seattle & King County Sexual Health Clinic. They will be able to explain all the options for covering the cost of PrEP that would essentially make it free.

PrEP is covered by most insurance plans. Medicaid (Apple Health) also covers PrEP. Go to wahealthplanfinder.org or call 1-855-923-4633 to find the right insurance plan for you. Drug companies may also provide discounts for PrEP to those who qualify.

If you do not have insurance but want to get PrEP at a lower out-of-pocket rate, visit Cost Plus Drug Company or GoodRx , and search for 'Generic Truvada' to get a discount.
