Teen Clinic Frequently Asked Questions
In Washington state, birth control and pregnancy testing and related care are confidential services for people of all ages, including people under 18 years old. This means that anyone can get pregnancy testing, prenatal care, abortion services, birth control, and emergency contraception without permission from a parent or guardian.
For STI testing and treatment, anyone 14 and older—and sometimes people under 14—can get care without permission from a parent or guardian.
We won't tell anyone about the services you receive unless you ask us to in writing, no matter your age. The only time we can't keep something private is if we need to report safety concerns, like if someone might hurt themselves or others.
We always encourage teens to talk with a parent or trusted adult about their healthcare. However, it is ultimately the teen's decision who to involve.
Your visit to Teen Clinic is free! If you make an appointment outside of walk-in hours, your visit is free as well. If you do not have insurance or if you have private insurance and do not want to use it, we will give you a form to sign up for a Washington State program called Family Planning Only (FPO). This program helps cover the cost of services you get at Teen Clinic.
We will not bill your parent or guardian's insurance unless you ask us to. This helps keep your visit private and makes sure they do not get a bill from the clinic.
When you turn 21, you can still come to our Public Health Centers for sexual and reproductive health services. You will not be able to come during Teen Clinic walk-in hours. You will need to make an appointment by calling our clinic. Appointments are available Monday through Friday.
Please find the clinic numbers for each clinic on the side of the page.
You're totally welcome to bring a friend, family member, or partner with you to Teen Clinic! We want you to feel comfortable, and if having someone with you helps, that's great. They can hang out with you in the waiting room, but they will need to stay there while you are seeing our providers.
Yes, you can get Plan B (also called emergency contraception or "the morning after pill") for someone else! You will need to meet with a provider first. They will explain how to take it and answer any questions you have. Plan B is most effective when taken as soon as possible, but it can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex.
