Computers & Imaging Equipment

Computers and imaging equipment, like printers and copiers, use a lot of energy to manufacture and operate, and they often contain toxic materials. It’s important to look at the full product lifecycle—from design and production to energy use and recycling to calculate total costs.

EPEAT Certified Devices (2025)

96% of all EPEAT devices procured by the County adhere to the gold standard

Estimated Environmental Benefits

  • 674,255.59 (kg CO2 eq) GHG emissions reduction
  • 3,185,659.43 kWh eq. Energy savings
  • 7,419,154.23 (liters) Water consumption savings
  • 499.59 (kg) Toxic substances avoided in the product
  • 126,585.70 (Dollars) Cost savings for energy use

For this category, leasing may be a better option than buying as the manufacturers are also responsible for proper recycling or disposal at the end of the product’s life. Choosing ENERGY STAR® or https://www.epeat.net/ office equipment helps save energy with efficient design and power management features.

Policy and Goals:

King County’s Sustainable Purchasing Executive Policy (CON 7-22-1-EP),

  • Lowering embodied greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with a product’s manufacture, transportation and use;
  • Saving energy through the purchase of energy-efficient products and equipment and increasing the use of renewable energy such as solar or wind power;
  • Minimizing pollutants to air and water, including indoor air emissions;
  • Promoting transparency, including disclosure of environmental, health, economic, and social risks through the use of environmental certifications and ecolabels, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Health Product Declarations (HPDs), and vendor sustainability ratings

King County’s 2025 Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP),

  • GHG 70. Pursue energy efficiency and energy reduction investments in County facilities
  • Appendix D: Buy energy star appliances and equipment

Managed Print Services success story

In 2022, King County established the Multifunction Devices (Printer, Copier, Scanner, Fax) Standardization Policy which has resulted in $386,477 annual savings → $1.74 million projected over 5 years – 320 trees saved per year – 157,000 W energy reduction

Quick Tips

Choose

  • Energy-efficient electronics (e.g., ENERGY STAR® certified)
  • Laptops or other low-energy devices
  • Re-manufactured or refurbished equipment
  • Repair and upgrade equipment to extend service life
  • Power down electronics when not in use for more than one hour
  • Enable “sleep” or “hibernate” mode to reduce energy consumption

Avoid

  • Desktop computers when laptops or thin clients can meet needs
  • Screen Savers (uses energy)

End of Life

  • Use manufacturer take-back program
  • Recycle through a certified, responsible e-waste recycler

An EPA checkmark indicates a certification, or standard is recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
