Community playgrounds receive King County grant funds

Summary

Youth Sports Facility Grant awards will fix up play areas in Fremont and Loyal Heights

Story

Playfields in Fremont and Loyal Heights will see improvements thanks to grant funding in King County’s 2013 budget. The Loyal Heights Community Center and the B.F. Day Elementary School are recipients of King County’s Youth Sports Facilities Grant (YSFG).

“Keeping our neighborhood play areas in good condition is a great investment in kids and healthy, safe, livable communities,” said Councilmember Larry Phillips, who represents Ballard and Fremont on the Metropolitan King County Council. “I was pleased to be able to support these grants, and I thank the community members who worked hard to raise matching funds and advocate for these projects.”

A YSFG will provide $5,855 to refurbish the basketball half-court at Loyal Heights Community Center that is experiencing erosion and buckling from tree roots. The court serves 250 participants from the surrounding Ballard community.

B. F. Day Elementary School in Fremont will receive a $50,000 YSFG to replace the school’s aging, play area and basketball court with a multi-sport court, restore the peace garden, and provide trails and landscaping. The improvements will serve B.F. Day students and children and families in the surrounding neighborhood.
