County Council recognizes State Champion Cleveland Girls Basketball Team

Lead by Council Chair Larry Gossett, the Metropolitan King County Council today recognized the members of the Cleveland High School Girls Basketball team, the winners of the State 3A Girls Basketball Championship.

The team, joined by Head Coach Stephenie Wheeler-Smith, was congratulated by the Council for their 45-43 overtime victory over Seattle Prep on March 2.



WHEREAS, the Cleveland High School Eagles Girls Basketball Team won the 2013 3A State Championship in a heart-stopping 45-43 overtime victory over Seattle Prep; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Principal Princess Shareef, Associate Principals Marjorie Milligan and Dr. Eddie Reed, Athletic Director Annette J. Duvall, and Basketball Head Coach Stephenie Wheeler-Smith, the Cleveland Eagles accomplished an overall win/loss record of 27-2; and

WHEREAS, over the past 10 years, the Eagles have amassed an impressive record of continued excellence, including two Metro Championships, one District Championship, and two State Championships; and

WHEREAS, the team consists of players Teja Kirby, Donniesha Webber, Myzhanique Ladd, Jayde Christopher, Ryshun Sampson, Ryshel Sampson, Alexia Mefi, Asiyah Davis, Makayla Roper, Joyce Harrell, and Ti’Erycka Clark; and

WHEREAS, under the five-year leadership of Head Coach Wheeler-Smith, nine seniors have graduated; and

WHEREAS, over the same five-year span, two former Cleveland Eagles Girls Basketball players are now playing Division I College Basketball; and

WHEREAS, one former Cleveland Eagle Girls Basketball player is attending Seattle University with a full academic scholarship;

NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Metropolitan King County Council, recognize and congratulate the

2013 CLEVELAND EAGLES GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM

for their exemplary commitment, accomplishment, and teamwork, clearly exhibited in achieving the highest pinnacle of excellence in high school basketball in the state of Washington.
