Dunn and Phillips: Reichert takes steps to make Mountains to Sound Greenway designation reality

Metropolitan King County Councilmembers Reagan Dunn and Larry Phillips, the co-sponsors of a motion calling for federal designation of the Mountains to Sound Greenway as a National Heritage Area, released this statement today on the introduction of the proposal by Congressman Dave Reichert:

“We applaud and thank Congressman Reichert for sponsoring the legislation supporting the Mountains to Sound Greenway. He has been a staunch advocate for this important and unique piece of land. Receiving the designation of National Heritage Area, should it pass, would be a first of its kind in Washington State.

“This distinction demonstrates the national significance of this unique landscape, while not affecting private property, water, hunting or fishing rights, or adding any new regulatory authority.

“The Mountains to Sound Greenway is truly one of the crown jewels of the Pacific Northwest and the United States: 1.5 million acres. 900,000 acres of public land. 1.4 million people. 28 cities. 1,600 miles of trails.

“We continue to urge Congress to pass this legislation and designate the Mountains to Sound Greenway as a National Heritage Area.”
