King County Council Chair Claudia Balducci issued the following statement on the passing of former U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton:

“I was sorry to learn of the passing of Sen. Slade Gorton today. 

“We live in a time when our federal government is often mired in partisanship. In his time in Congress, Sen. Gorton was a leader who was able to work across the aisle for the benefit of his constituents. His work with Sen. Patty Murray to secure federal funding for our region's long-delayed mass transit system likely saved that program. The growing rail and bus system we enjoy in our region will stand as a testament to Sen. Gorton's legacy. I am grateful for his leadership and send condolences to his family on his passing.”
