Story
King County Council Chair Claudia Balducci issued the following statement hours before King County Elections released its first results of the 2020 general election, sharing her appreciation to voters and observations about the ease and accessibility for King County residents to participate in our democracy:
“As we await the tally of state and local voting, I want to take a moment to thank and acknowledge King County voters and the staff and volunteers at King County Elections for what is already a record-shattering election.
“As of noon today, King County Elections reports that over 1,118,753 voters have turned in their ballots, almost 80% of all registered voters. With these impressive early voting results in hand, I’m confident we will hit our county’s 90% turnout goal.
“King County’s election system is one of the most accessible in the nation and these early voting results prove it. Voting should be an accessible right for all, not an obstacle course to be navigated. I’m proud to say that voting by mail in King County remains convenient, accurate, secure, cost effective and accessible to all. As our nation charts its path following this historic election, I encourage counties and states to adopt similar methods with the goal of enfranchising every eligible voter throughout our democracy.”
