Conservation Futures Advisory Committee recruitment
Consider applying to serve on the Conservation Futures Advisory Committee to recommend grant funding awards to the King County executive and council. The 2025 deadline for applications is August 15, 2025.
King County is seeking volunteers to fill three positions on the Conservation Futures Advisory Committee. The committee makes recommendations to the King County Executive and Council for awards of Conservation Futures grant funding. These grants help local governments and nonprofits purchase natural areas, passive-use parks, urban greenspaces, wildlife habitat, trails, farms, and forests throughout King County.

Recruitment and eligibility information
Applicants should be interested in and knowledgeable about open space acquisition and protection. We strive to have committee membership reflect the full diversity of the county. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including people from communities that have been historically excluded or underrepresented—such as Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color, LGBTQ+, immigrants and refugees, and people from low-income backgrounds.
The three open positions have specific geographic residency requirements, and you must live in Council District 1, 2, 3, 6, or 8 to apply. Before you apply, please review the residency requirements map of eligible districts, and/or confirm your eligibility at kingcounty.gov/CouncilDistricts.
- District 1 includes northeast Seattle through north Lake Washington cities.
- District 2 includes central and southeast Seattle through Skyway and part of Tukwila.
- District 3 includes the northeastern county, from eastside cities like Woodinville, Sammamish, and Issaquah through the rural area to the northern and eastern county line.
- District 6 includes eastside cities from Kirkland through Bellevue and Mercer Island.
- District 8 includes central and southwest Seattle, White Center, Vashon Island, and south to Burien and parts of Tukwila.
What’s involved in committee service?
Committee service requires a significant volunteer commitment. An approximate schedule and estimate of hourly commitments are listed below (subject to change). This represents approximately 35 hours in meetings, 12 hours independent review of materials, and 12 hours if attending optional field trips:
January
Committee meeting: 3 hours, in-person meeting
February to May: grant round
Read ~60 grant applications: 10 hours, individual work
Online meeting project presentations: 13 hours, six online meetings
Committee review and decision-making: 12 hours, four or five online meetings
Optional field trips: 12 hours, two in-person trips
September to October: review progress on past awards
Committee review and decision-making: 6 hours, two online meetings
Review materials for meetings: 2 hours, individual work
