An inmate in the custody of the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention as a participant in the Work Release Program broke a window on the eleventh floor of the King County Courthouse and jumped to his death at 11:15 am this morning.

The person, a twenty-nine year old adult male, was arrested on a community corrections violation and booked into the King County Correctional Facility on October 11, 2010 where he was assigned to work release.

The King County Medical Examiner will be conducting an autopsy.

As part of the standard review process for jail-related deaths, the Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention will conduct an internal investigation. The Seattle Police will also conduct an independent investigation.

The Work Release Program is a court-ordered partial custody program where offenders go to work, school, or substance abuse treatment during the day, and are required to return to a secure facility at night where they may pay room or board on a sliding scale based on income. Offenders are responsible for obtaining their own healthcare and transportation to and from work or appointments while in the program, and leave for all prearranged appointments unescorted.
