Executive Constantine thanks state House for approving a bill to ban bump stocks

Summary

King County Executive Dow Constantine today issued the following statement after the state House of Representatives approved a bill prohibiting trigger modification devices known as "bump stocks."

Story

I thank the state of House of Representatives for joining the Senate to ban bump stocks and to encourage people to voluntarily surrender their firearms if they are considering suicide. I agree with members of the House who described these bills as the least they can do. There is still time during this legislative session to do more – and I hope they will, because we can’t count on this Congress and President to take action that will save lives.

We know what works. We can, and should, apply the same successful public health approach that dramatically reduced deaths from smoking and auto accidents to prevent firearm deaths. It is not lack of evidence or options that stands in the way -- it is the lack of political will. If the federal government will not deliver bipartisan solutions, we will.
