Executive Constantine on 2020 Census ruling: Thanks to all who stood and continue to stand on the front lines of this fight
Summary
King County Executive Dow Constantine issued the following statement after a federal judge blocked an attempt by the Trump administration to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census.
Story
This is a critical decision to protect all our communities and ensure they feel safe to be counted in the 2020 census, but the fight isn’t over.
We have heard from our communities that this is the single most important issue for the upcoming census -- designed to skew the census results by instilling fear and distrust here at home and across the nation.
As soon as it was announced last March, I joined many other community leaders and elected officials in forcefully denouncing the administration's gambit to suppress census participation through fear and intimidation.
Thanks to all who have stood and continue to stand on the front lines of this fight.
I am glad the courts agree this question was a cynical and illegal attempt by the administration to undermine an accurate census by excluding millions who call the United States home.
