57th Ave S Sidewalk Improvement Project

Construction is anticipated to begin summer 2026

Road Services is building a new sidewalk to connect two existing ones on 57th Ave S in Skyway. Right now, there’s no continuous path between Martin Luther King Jr Way S and S Langston Rd. This project will help people who walk, use wheelchairs, or push strollers travel more safely and easily along the road.

Status update

December 2025

Road Services expects to build a new sidewalk on 57th Avenue South, between Martin Luther King Jr. Way South and South Langston Road in the summer of 2026. This will connect existing sidewalks and make it easier and safer for people to walk in the area. Once the sidewalk is complete, the road on 57th Avenue South will also be repaved to improve driving conditions.

When this project is scheduled, we’ll add the dates to this website, our MyCommute map, or you can sign up to receive email/text notifications about road work in Skyway at Road Alerts.

Project overview

The 57th Avenue S Sidewalk project is one of 45 projects selected by community members to be funded by King County as part of its first participatory budgeting process. This project will improve both walking and driving conditions along 57th Avenue South, between Martin Luther King Jr. Way South and South Langston Road. A new 5-foot-wide concrete sidewalk will be built to fill in the missing section between existing sidewalks. This will create a continuous, safer, and accessible path for people walking in the neighborhood, whether they’re heading to school, the bus stop, or just out for a walk.

Sidewalks are important because they help keep pedestrians safe by giving them a space away from traffic. They also make it easier for people of all ages and abilities, including those using wheelchairs, strollers, or walkers, to move around the community. In addition to the sidewalk, the project will include new stormwater drainage improvements to improve drainage and reduce water buildup along the road.

Once the sidewalk and drainage work are done, crews will repave the slightly wider road with a fresh layer of asphalt between South Langston Road and SR 900/Martin Luther King Jr. Way South. This will help create a smoother experience for drivers, cyclists, and transit riders alike. Construction is expected to begin between summer and fall of 2026.

The project is located on 57th Ave S between Martin Luther King Jr Way S and S Langston Rd, in Skyway.

What to expect during construction

Construction is currently planned to take place from Summer to Fall of 2026. The road will remain open during construction. All vehicles will have access through the work zone, though travelers should expect delays. During work hours, flaggers will direct two-way traffic through a single open lane as needed. Neighbors may notice increased truck traffic on the road, and dust, odor, and vibration from construction equipment.

Budget and funding sources

The total estimated cost of the sidewalk project is $1.4 million, and $538,000 is the expected total for the asphalt overlay portion of the project. The sidewalk project is funded by the King County Department of Local Services Participatory Budgeting Program, and the overlay project is funded by King County Department of Local Services.

Frequently asked questions

The project is anticipated to be in construction from Summer to Fall 2026.
Yes. All residents on 57th Ave S will have access to their homes and driveways. You may experience slight delays while crews are at work. Parking in the right-of-way will be restricted during the project.

The existing pavement width is approximately 21 feet. The new construction will provide pavement widths ranging from 24 to 26.8 feet, including two travel lanes totaling 22 feet in width and shoulder or edge buffer on both sides.

These improvements will enhance driving safety, provide more consistent roadway geometry, and better accommodate vehicle operations.

Yes. If emergency vehicles will be able to use 57th Ave S to respond to emergencies.
No. The SR 900/57th Ave S to S 135th Pedestrian and Safety Improvements WSDOT project is expected to begin in 2027 and will construct bicycle and pedestrian facilities on SR 900 that allow users to access transit and community destinations. Facilities will include a shared used path, pedestrian lighting, ADA ramps, bus stop improvements, intersection improvements, new pedestrian crossings and roadway treatments to slow traffic and discourage speeding. WSDOT is aware of this King County project and is in close communication with the project managers. The WSDOT project has no expected impact on this project.
13 trees and shrubs, all of which are in the public right of way will be removed to make space for the new sidewalk. The County will replant the area with deciduous native trees and shrubs along with seeding.
King County scientists have identified small areas of wetland along the eastern roadside stormwater ditch. While the wetlands are considered to be minor, the project design includes measures to minimize environmental impact to the wetland area. The County will also purchase mitigation credits to address unavoidable impacts to a very small area the wetland.
