Status update

Road Services expects this project to go to construction in spring 2026.

Please check this website, MyCommute, or sign up for Road Alerts to receive a notification about this project and others in Skyway.

Project overview

King County Road Services is replacing 26 outdated sidewalk curb ramps at seven intersections in Skyway. Many curb ramps along this corridor and near Campbell Hill Elementary School are over 30 years old and need to be brought to modern standards. The improvements make it easier and safer for people walking in the community or to school or in wheelchairs to use the sidewalk.

Curb ramps benefit the whole community and are used by pedestrians, those using strollers, seniors, in addition to people with physical disabilities.

In addition to replacing the curb ramps, the pavement on 68th Ave S/S 124th St from Campbell Hill Elementary School to Renton Ave S is cracked and has several potholes. Over time, the pavement has been patched and it is time for fresh, smooth asphalt. The County will pave just over 0.5 miles of roadway with new pavement.

Benefits of modern sidewalk curb ramps

When public spaces are improved and made more accessible, the whole community benefits. Curb ramps make it easier for people with disabilities. Ramps also make it easier for people pushing strollers, those who need to use a handcart, or people carrying heavy bags.

Our new curb ramps will have detectable warning surfaces so that visually impaired pedestrians know where to safely exit the sidewalk.

What to expect during construction

ADA Curb Ramp Replacement

Each curb ramp may require the sidewalk corner to be closed for up to a week. When the corner is closed, a signed detour will direct pedestrians across the street. Construction may require overnight or multiple day closures of the corner.

  • There will be temporary pedestrian detours when the sidewalks are closed for construction. The pedestrian detours will shift throughout the project.
  • Sidewalk corners of intersections may be closed even when crews are not working.
  • Workers may need to use parking spaces that are adjacent to active construction. Look for round-the-clock no parking signs when these spaces are occupied.
  • Adjacent lane closures on the road are possible during construction. Flaggers will direct traffic when crews are working.
  • Project updates will be made on this website and on MyCommute website.
  • Contact us with any questions or if you need or want information translated into a different language and/or format.

Paving

  • Work will occur Monday to Friday generally between the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hours will be adjusted slightly as needed to avoid peak travel periods.
  • Paving is a moving operation, and crews work in sections. Flaggers will move two-way traffic through a single open lane.
  • On street parking will be restricted in sections where crews are working.
  • If at all possible, the contractor will place electronic message boards in the area at least 72 hours prior to the lane restrictions. Please check MyCommute for the latest information.

Construction hours and noise

  • Crews will work Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • People living or working nearby may hear noise from jackhammers, trucks, generators, and other construction equipment.

Budget and funding resources

The Washington State Transportation Improvement Board awarded $1,706,037 in Urban Arterial Program grant funding for this project.

Project timeline

  • Design complete: Fall 2025
  • Construction work anticipated to begin: April 2026
  • Anticipated substantial construction complete: August 2026

Frequently asked questions

Pedestrians may be detoured to the opposite side of the street during construction. Each curb ramp may require the corner of the sidewalk to be closed for up to a week. When the corner is closed, a signed detour will direct pedestrians across the street.
During construction crews will temporarily remove the traffic detection system on 68th Ave S at Renton Ave S. Road Services will use cameras to detect traffic while the under-pavement loops are being replaced. Once the loops are replaced, the camera system will be removed.
Road Services will coordinate with METRO and the Renton School District Department of Transportation. METRO and school buses along with other travelers will be able to use the road during construction. It is possible that there will be slight delays as flaggers move two-way traffic through a single open lane.
Working with concrete is weather dependent. This work cannot be done if it is very wet or very cold. It is possible that some of the work may need to be rescheduled due to weather conditions.
The scope of this project is limited to replacement of the curb ramps and roadway paving. Many of the curb ramps in this area are over 30 years old and need to be brought to modern standards.
This project is only funded to replace the curb ramps and pave the roadway. One tree was removed through this project, and one tree will be planted nearby approximately one block away.

Yes. Access to all businesses, schools, and homes near or adjacent to construction will be maintained during this project. Travelers may experience short delays while the project team moves to allow access to driveways.

  • Watch for status updates to this website and our MyCommute website.
  • Sign up for Road Alerts to receive an email or text message when work is occurring in Skyway.
  • Flyers will be provided to nearby businesses, recreational facilities, and neighbors.
  • Signs will be posted alerting pedestrians to upcoming temporary sidewalk closures.
  • Electronic message boards will be placed to alert travelers to the upcoming work in their community.
  • No parking signs will be posted at least 72 hours in advance.
  • Posts on X (Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram will highlight important information.
