Summary

Dash Point State Park Beach will be closed to shellfish harvesting for the next three weeks (until January 9, 2025) because of a sewage spill.

A sewer main issue in Federal Way on Wednesday, December 18 resulted in sewage releasing into Puget Sound. Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has issued an emergency closure of Dash Point State Park Beach to commercial and recreational shellfish harvesting. This closure will remain in effect until January 9, 2025. Advisory signs have been posted at the beach warning people not to collect shellfish.

People should always check the DOH shellfish safety website before harvesting shellfish.

Species of shellfish affected

The closure includes all species of shellfish including clams, geoduck, scallops, mussels, oysters, snails and other invertebrates. While crab and shrimp are not included, we recommend against harvesting and eating them from this area during the closure.

What's the risk?

Eating shellfish that have been contaminated with sewage can cause mild to serve illness. This is especially true if it has not been cooked to 145 degrees. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, headache, and fever. If you have eaten shellfish from this beach and are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek medical care right away.

Always check before harvesting shellfish

Recreational shellfish harvesting can be closed at any time for multiple reasons, including rising levels of pollution or paralytic shellfish poison (PSP). Therefore, harvesters are advised to call the DOH Biotoxin Hotline at 1-800-562-5632 or visit the shellfish safety website before harvesting shellfish anywhere in the Puget Sound.
