9-1-1 Communications Careers

As a 9-1-1 Communications Specialist, you will serve as the primary link between people in need of emergency assistance and the individuals who can provide it.


Every day is different; you never know what kind of call you may receive next. You might handle a car accident, provide support to a victim of domestic violence, initiate a search and rescue mission, or serve as a lifeline to a deputy in need of aid on the street.

  • 9-1-1 Communications Specialist (Call-Taker) - New openings early 2025
  • Answer inbound 9-1-1 calls.
  • Gather all relevant information from callers; determine if call is emergency or non-emergency.
  • Input information into computer aided-dispatch system (CAD).
  • Route information to dispatch if it's an emergency call or to the appropriate designated service agency if it's a non-emergency call.
  • 911 Dispatcher (Requires two years of experience in a 9-1-1 communications center)
  • Triage emergency requests for assistance. Relay pertinent information to responders via radio. 
  • Assign emergency response priority to events by determining whether immediate response could save lives or prevent crimes. 
  • Manage multiple radio frequencies and radio communications simultaneously. 
  • Record information and maintain required logs, event cards and other forms during periods of computer aided dispatch down time.
