Program focuses on API and Latino immigrant fishing communities
An EPA study (6.5 MB) found that more than 20 ethnic/language groups fish on the Duwamish River. Fishers from Asian, Pacific Islander (API), and Latino immigrant communities are catching, eating and sharing the contaminated seafood from the river. The health warning signs have not been effective in reaching fishers who speak little to no English – most of these fishers speak Vietnamese, Khmer and Spanish.
The Program focuses on reaching these multi-ethnic fishers of the Duwamish River, as well as pregnant women, nursing moms and young children who received and prepare seafood from recreational fishers.

Community Health Advocate Training Curriculum
Based on the Community Health Worker/Promotor Model, where peer health workers reach out to communities that historically face barriers to accessing resources and services, Public Health's training builds on the CHAs' strengths, cultural expertise and self-empowerment, while increasing their capacity (knowledge and skills) to promote healthy seafood consumption actions in their communities.
Washington Healthy Fish Guide for supermarkets
Take this card with you next time you are buying seafood at your local market. Many health choices for everyone in the green column. If you are pregnant or nursing, a young child (under 6 years old), and someone who plan to have kids, do not eat the seafood in the red column, "AVOID". If you are not one of these sensitive groups, you can eat from the red column. If you do, choose fish from the green column for the rest of the month.
